(Personal Computers) This new ZX53VW gaming laptop from Asus is a real powerhouse. It comes with a 4GB NVIDIA GTX 960M which supports 4K video on an external monitor via the HDMI port. SEE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW to make the GTX 960M the default display adapter. There's not a lot of detailed information on this laptop so here's what I know: * There is a USB C connector but it is not Thunderbolt so it can't be used for video (I was really hoping for this to work for a dual monitor setup.) * There is 8GB of DDR4 laptop memory included. There are two memory slots and they support 16GB per slot for a total of 32GB. See my photo where I removed the 8GB chip and added two 16GB DDR4 chips for 32GB RAM. Make sure to buy DDR 4 laptop memory like Crucial 16GB Single DDR4 2133 MT/s (PC4-17000) SODIMM 260-Pin Memory - CT16G4SFD8213 for a total of 24GB RAM or... Buy this if you want more gaming power than an XBoxOne or PS4, in a portable laptop., November 27, 2016 This review is from: ASUS ZX53VW 15.6" Gaming Laptop, NVIDIA, GTX 960M 4GB, FHD, Intel Core i5-6300HQ, 8GB DDR4, 512GB SSD, Backlit keyboard, Microsoft signature image, Anti-Glare Matte Display. (Personal Computers) BACKGROUND: I'm a gamer (and a professor too :-). I wanted a laptop that could play my favorite game (Dark Souls 3) at max settings, 1080p/30fps, and also run R for statistical analyses. Dark Souls 3 is a graphics-intensive game, and my previous laptop could not even muster 10fps, with its AMD A10 APU. QUICK FEATURE SUMMARY: The ASUS ZX53VW has an Intel i5-6300HQ quad-core processor, and NVidia GTX 960M w/4GB dedicated RAM, 8GB of RAM, and a 512Mb SSD, DVD (yes!), 2 USB 3.0 ports, 1 USB 2.0 port, 1 USB C port (smartphone), and SD card reader CUT TO THE CHASE: If you want the power of an Xbox One or PS4, next-gen console, in a laptop, this is the most inexpensive solution—it is the cheapest laptop that outperforms gaming consoles. This computer is blazingly fast. It played Dark Souls 3 (again a graphics intensive game) at max settings 1080p/30-35fps, and at low settings 1080p/50-60fps. That's BETTER performance than that you get on an Xbox One or PS4... The Asus ZX53 VW is a great laptop for the price. Pros 512 GB m.2 Sata drive 8GB DDR4 RAM The screen that comes with it is a LG IPS display (great viewing angles) Nvidia GTX 960M with 4GB of GDDR5 memory Backlit Keyboard is solid and nice to type on Solid construction all around Good venting, blows hot air under load but the keyboard does not get hot Will play most newer games on HIGH settings. Cons Battery life is sub par on this model but if you are plugged in most of the time, does it really matter? ****EDIT*** As I have done some more extensive testing on this laptop, the battery life is downgraded to Fair at best. If you will be constantly plugged into a wall outlet then this laptop is fine, but do not ask much of the battery life. It's a shame that such a well built model is packed with such a small capacity battery. I will be returning...
